A knob that spins freely or feels loose in your hand usually means it's no longer gripping the spindle underneath, either because the grub screw has worked loose or the spindle itself has worn round from years of turning. Less often, the barrel housing behind the knob has come loose in the valve.
Applies to: shower cabins and steam showers
Quick diagnosis
If your shower cabin is showing these symptoms:
- Knob turns with little or no resistance and nothing happens
- Knob wobbles or feels loose when you touch it, even before turning
- Knob has come away from the valve slightly, sitting proud of the wall
- Problem started after the knob was last removed for cleaning or a repair
Likely causes, most likely first
- Grub screw has loosened. The small screw that clamps the knob to the spindle can work loose over time, especially if it wasn’t tightened fully on refitting.
- Spindle has worn round. Years of turning can wear the flats off a splined or D-shaped spindle, so even a tight grub screw can’t get a proper grip any more.
- Barrel housing has worked loose in the valve. The housing that holds the cartridge in place is secured by a faceplate nut and a rear fixing nut, and if either has loosened the whole assembly can move.
Likely cause
Most of the time this is the grub screw, and it's worth ruling that out before assuming the spindle itself is worn; it costs nothing and takes a minute to check.
Check this first
- Take the knob off and check the grub screw is present and tight, not just loose in its thread
- Look at the spindle for rounded edges or flat spots where it should be gripping
- Check the knob isn’t just sitting proud because the barrel housing behind it has worked loose
Which part fits your cabin
| Brand | Model / range | Part | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Insignia | GT, INS, Kids, Shower Cabin, Steam Shower Cabin and Twin Shower Cabin ranges … 85 models | Temperature Knob (SP031) | Photo-matched against Insignia’s parts (not on their per-model pages) |

This is a floor, not a full list … match the spindle and barrel measurements against your own part before ordering.
How to identify your part
Where the barrel housing itself is loose rather than just the knob, the replacement housing measures 28.8mm in barrel diameter and 37.6mm in barrel height, and comes with its own faceplate securing nut and rear fixing nut. It’s built for the diverter/selector side of a shower mixer valve rather than the temperature side, so check which knob is loose before ordering it.
Parts that fix this problem
How to fix it
- Pull the knob straight off the spindle to expose the grub screw
- Check the grub screw is fully seated and tighten it if it’s loose
- Refit the knob and test; if it still spins freely, the spindle itself is likely worn
- Where the whole assembly moves rather than just the knob, isolate the water and check the faceplate and rear fixing nuts on the barrel housing behind it
- Replace the barrel housing if either nut won’t hold it firm once tightened
When to call a professional
Only if you get as far as removing the valve housing and aren't confident refitting it watertight; the knob and grub screw checks are safe to do yourself.
