Why Is My Shower Cabin Light Not Working

A shower cabin light that's stopped working while everything else still runs is most commonly the light fitting itself rather than a wiring fault. Older cabins run a fluorescent-style ring through a ballast, newer ones a plug-in LED ring, and knowing which you have decides the fix.

Applies to: shower cabins

If your steam shower light has stopped working but the rest of the cabin still functions normally, the issue is usually isolated to the light fitting itself. In many cases the control panel, radio, fan and steam functions will continue to operate, which confirms the shower cabin is still receiving power.

Steam shower lighting systems are typically low-voltage and located in the roof of the cabin. Depending on the age of the unit, the light may either run through a small transformer or use a modern LED fitting.

In most situations the fault is caused by a failed light fitting or a loose connector above the roof of the cabin.

This issue can occur across many steam shower brands including Insignia, Vidalux, Aqualusso, Lisna Waters and Aqualux.

Quick diagnosis

If your shower cabin is showing these symptoms:

  • The light stays off but the panel, fan and radio work normally
  • The light flickered or dimmed before it went out completely
  • The cabin is an older model with a tube-style ceiling light
  • The light comes on briefly then cuts out again
  • Nothing happens at all when the light button is pressed

Likely causes, most likely first

  1. A failed light fitting. Both older fluorescent-style rings and newer LED units eventually reach the end of their life, and this is the most common cause when nothing else on the shower cabin or steam shower is affected.
  2. A failed ballast, on older cabins. Cabins built around a fluorescent-style ring rely on a small ballast mounted on the roof; if that fails, the tube won’t light even though it’s otherwise fine.
  3. A plug connector coming adrift above the roof panel. Each section of roof wiring joins the next with a plug rather than a hard-wired join, and the one feeding the light can loosen enough to cut power to it alone.
  4. A blown bulb rather than a fitting fault, on the oldest tube-style units. Worth ruling out before replacing the whole fitting.

Likely cause

On a cabin where everything else still works, the fault sits with the light far more often than the wiring. Older fluorescent-style rings depend on a ballast that can fail independently of the tube, while newer LED rings simply reach the end of their working life as a single sealed unit. Where an older cabin's ballast has failed, fitting a retrofit LED ring is usually simpler than sourcing a like-for-like replacement, since both our LED rings are built to bypass the ballast entirely. A loose connector above the roof is worth ruling out either way, since reseating a plug costs nothing and is the same first step regardless of which light type is fitted.

Check this first

  • Confirm the panel, fan and radio are all still working, which rules out a power problem with the whole shower cabin or steam shower
  • Look at the light through the diffuser cover for any sign it’s flickering rather than fully dead
  • Note whether the cabin has an older tube-style light or a modern LED ring, since they fail differently

This is a floor, not the full range … check the diameter and pin count on your own fitting before ordering.

How to identify your part

  • The multi-coloured LED ring is 270mm in diameter, 12V, and uses a standard 4-pin connection; the white LED ring is the same 270mm, 12V fitting
  • Older tube-style lights run through a separate ballast rather than a straight plug-in swap; either LED ring is a direct retrofit that bypasses that ballast
  • Measure your existing fitting’s diameter and count the connector pins before ordering, since a 270mm ring won’t drop into a smaller cutout

Parts that fix this problem

If the cabin light has stopped working, the solution is usually to replace the light fitting. Many modern LED halo lights are designed to retrofit older shower cabins and can often connect directly to the existing wiring.

If you're unsure which replacement light your shower cabin uses, send us a photo of the roof light or wiring connection and we can help identify the correct replacement.

How to fix it

  1. Confirm the rest of the shower cabin or steam shower is still working normally
  2. Isolate the power at the spur before opening up the roof
  3. Measure the light fitting’s diameter and check how many pins the connector has
  4. Check the connector’s pushed home; if it’s fine, the light fitting or, on older cabins, the ballast, will need replacing
  5. On an older ballast-driven cabin, fitting a retrofit LED ring bypasses the ballast rather than needing a like-for-like replacement
  6. Fit the replacement using the existing screws and reconnect the matching connector

When to call a professional

Reseating a light connector is simple enough once the power's off at the spur. Where an older cabin's ballast turns out to be the fault rather than the fitting, that's worth handing to an electrician alongside the rewire.
