DIY Steam Room Kits
Building a steam room or steam shower? The kits here pair a steam generator with its control panel and steam outlet, from 3kW for a small enclosure up to 18kW for a large room. You’ll also find add-ons: aromatherapy, colour lighting and a glass guard for the steam outlet. The size you need depends on the room’s volume and what the walls are made of. Stuck on sizing? Send us the room’s measurements and wall finish.

How to work out the size you need
- Volume: multiply length × width × height in metres to get cubic metres. Keep the inside ceiling at 2.4m or lower.
- Wall finish: multiply by 2 for natural stone, marble or granite, by 1.35 for ceramic or porcelain tiles or glass blocks, and by 1.25 for man-made panelling.
- Outside walls: add 10% for one, 20% for two. A window or skylight means going up one size.
- Match it: 3kW up to 3.5m³, 6kW up to 7m³, 9kW up to 10m³, 12kW up to 14m³, 15kW up to 19m³. Near the top of a band, step up.

Problems after fitting
Weak steam usually means the water supply is restricted or steam is escaping the room. See why steam is weak.
A room that’s slow to fill is often cold or poorly sealed rather than faulty. See why it takes too long to heat.
If it trips the electrics, isolate the power and read why a steam shower trips the electric.
Which add-ons fit your generator
The Insignia HomeFit is a 3kW kit with a Bluetooth touch screen and auto drain. The Insignia Signature range runs from 7.5kW to 18kW, and its controller lasts longer fitted outside the steam room.
| Brand | Models / ranges | Our part |
|---|---|---|
| Insignia | HomeFit 3kW kit and Insignia 6kW, 9kW and 12kW generators | Steam Room Lighting System |
| Insignia | Insignia 6kW, 9kW and 12kW generators (22mm steam nozzle) | Aromatherapy Oil Diffuser Essence Holder & Essential Oil Kit |
| Insignia | Insignia HomeFit, and most generators with a standard ½” steam outlet connection | Aromatherapy Steam Upgrade Kit |
These are popular fits, not a full list. If your generator isn’t here, a photo will confirm it.
Fitting tip
Don’t mount the control panel above the steam outlet. Many panels have the thermostat built in, and rising steam stops it reading the room’s true temperature.
When to call a professional
The electrics are a job for a qualified electrician, and the generator needs an RCD circuit breaker. A 3kW unit can go on a fused spur from a circuit that isn’t already heavily loaded. Bigger units need their own circuit, and 9kW and above need a three-phase supply.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the generator go?
As close to the room as you can: an adjacent cupboard, a vanity unit or the loft above. Leave 200 to 300mm clear on every side and the top. A loft or basement must be heated, with the pipes lagged.
What plumbing does it need?
A permanent cold feed with an isolation valve on standard 1/2-inch BSP fittings, plus a drain. The drain water is minimal and can usually join the bathroom’s existing waste.
Where should the steam outlet go?
About 150mm above the floor, at the opposite end from the seat and away from the door.
