In most cases this is completely normal. The generator has reached the cabin's target temperature and is cycling off before it restarts. It only points to a fault if the steam doesn't come back on, or a warning appears on the panel.
Applies to: steam showers
If your steam shower starts normally but then stops producing steam part way through your session, this is often completely normal behaviour, depending on when it happens.
Steam showers are designed to reach a set temperature and then cycle on and off to maintain that temperature. However, if the steam stops too early, doesn’t restart, or is accompanied by warnings or beeping, there may be an issue with water supply, pressure, or internal sensors.
Understanding when and why the steam stops is the key to diagnosing the problem correctly.
Quick diagnosis
If your steam shower is showing these symptoms:
- Steam pauses once the cabin feels hot, then restarts a few minutes later
- Steam stops and doesn't come back on for the rest of the session
- A beeping sound or a warning symbol appears when the steam cuts out
- Steam stops well before the cabin has properly heated up
- The same session used to run without stopping and now cuts out partway through
Likely causes, most likely first
- Normal temperature cycling. The cabin has clearly reached temperature, steam pauses, then restarts on its own within a few minutes.
- The timer or time-limit setting has ended the session early. Check the control panel setting against the session length you meant to run.
- Restricted or low water supply reaching the generator. Steam stops early and doesn’t return, whether from a closed valve, a kinked hose, or household pressure on the low side.
- A blocked steam outlet nozzle. Steam stops from a pressure or heat overload rather than a water shortage, and you can see scale on the nozzle.
- A sensor fault tripping the safety shutdown. You’re in a hard water area, and see an E2-style warning on the panel before the steam cuts out (codes vary by make).
Likely cause
A steam generator reaches the cabin's target temperature, pauses, then restarts as the temperature drops. That's the normal cycle and needs nothing doing. Where the pause happens earlier than you'd expect, check the timer or time-limit setting on the control panel first, since a short session length reads the same as a fault. Where the steam doesn't restart at all, the generator has usually stopped because it isn't getting enough water, either from a restricted supply, pressure below roughly 1.5 bar, or a steam outlet nozzle blocked with scale causing a pressure or heat overload. In hard water areas, a scaled water level sensor can also trigger a safety shutdown, which some control panels show as an E2-style warning.
Check this first
- Time how long the pause lasts. If steam restarts within a few minutes, this is normal cycling, not a fault.
- Check the timer or time-limit setting on the control panel against the session length you expect.
- Check the water supply to the generator is fully open with no kinks in the hose.
- Note whether any warning symbol or beep appears when the steam stops.
- Look at the steam outlet nozzle for visible scale blocking it.
- Check your household water pressure if you know it, or ask a plumber to check it if you’re not sure.

Parts that fix this problem
In most cases, this issue is related to water supply, pressure, or sensor readings rather than a failed component. Start with basic checks before considering part replacement.
Not sure whether your steam shower is cycling normally or stopping due to a fault? Send us a photo or short video and we’ll help you diagnose the issue.
How to fix it
- Check whether the steam restarts on its own after a short pause before doing anything else
- Check the timer or time-limit setting on the control panel matches the session length you expect
- Make sure the supply valve to the generator is fully open and the hose isn’t kinked or trapped
- Look at the steam outlet nozzle for scale and clear it if it’s blocked
- Have your water pressure checked if the shower is fed from a tank or a low-pressure supply, and have a plumber fit a pump if it’s below the minimum
- Isolate the power at the fused spur before opening the generator casing
- Descale the water level sensor probes if the unit shows a no-water warning despite the supply being fine
Also described as
- Steam turns off mid session
- Steam cuts out during use
- Steam stops working after a few minutes
- Steam generator shuts off
- Steam stops then restarts
When to call a professional
If the water supply and pressure are fine and the steam still won't restart after descaling, or you keep seeing E2-style warnings, that points to a sensor or control fault beyond a DIY fix. Isolate the power at the fused spur and get a qualified electrician or our support team to look at it.
