A smell from the drain almost always means the trap has either dried out or has debris sitting in standing water inside it, not a fault with the shower itself. A dry trap lets drain smells back up; a wet, blocked one just goes stale.
Applies to: shower cabins
Quick diagnosis
If your shower cabin is showing these symptoms:
- A drain-like smell near the shower, worse when it hasn't been used for a while
- A musty or stagnant smell rather than a sharp drain odour
- Smell is stronger straight after the shower has been run
- Smell persists even after cleaning the visible parts of the tray
- No visible blockage or slow drainage, just the smell
Likely causes, most likely first
- A dried-out trap. A shower used infrequently, such as in a guest bathroom, can let the small amount of water sitting in the trap evaporate, breaking the water seal that normally keeps drain smells out.
- Debris sitting in standing water. Hair and soap residue trapped inside the waste or flexible hose can sit in a small amount of water and turn stale, giving a musty rather than drain-like smell.
- A poor fall on the waste pipe. As with slow drainage, a shallow or dipped run on the home’s waste pipe can leave water sitting in the pipework rather than clearing fully, letting it turn stale over time.
Likely cause
Every shower drain relies on a small amount of water sitting in the trap to seal out the smell from further down the waste pipe. If that water evaporates because the shower hasn't been used for a while, drain smells can rise straight back up until the trap is refilled. Where the shower is used regularly, the more likely cause is hair or soap debris sitting in a small pool of water inside the trap or flexible hose, which turns stale rather than draining away cleanly. The built-in trap on a shower waste is shallow, so it's worth checking first before assuming anything further down is at fault.
Check this first
- If the shower hasn’t been used for a few days, run it for a minute and see if that clears the smell … it usually means the trap had simply dried out.
- Lift the trap insert and check whether the smell is coming from debris sitting in it rather than the drain itself.
- Note whether the smell is musty (points to stagnant water) or more of a drain smell (points to a dry trap letting air back up).

Parts that fix this problem
How to fix it
- Run the shower for a minute or two to refill the trap if it hasn’t been used recently
- Lift out the removable trap insert and clean away any hair, soap or debris
- Flush the flexible waste hose through with warm water to clear any residue sitting inside it
- If the smell keeps coming back even with regular use, the shower’s own built-in trap is shallow by design … fitting an inline self-sealing waste valve, available from plumbing suppliers, is the fix for a persistent smell
- If the smell persists after that, check the fall on the household waste pipe isn’t creating a dip where water can sit and turn stale
When to call a professional
If cleaning the trap and hose doesn't clear the smell, or it smells like drains rather than staleness, get a plumber to check the fall and venting on the household waste run.
