Why Is My Shower Cabin Water Stuck on Hot or Cold?

Water that stays stuck fully hot or fully cold, or that never gets properly hot however far you turn the control, points to a thermostatic cartridge that has seized rather than one that's simply worn. Limescale is the usual reason it's stuck, though a handle that has slipped off its true position, or a hot water supply that isn't hot enough in the first place, are both worth ruling out before you touch the cartridge.

Quick diagnosis

If your shower cabin is showing these symptoms:

  • Temperature control turns freely but the water stays at one extreme
  • Water was working normally and has now settled permanently hot or permanently cold
  • Water never gets properly hot, even with the control turned fully towards hot
  • Turning the dial towards the middle makes no difference to the temperature
  • The problem appeared suddenly rather than building up gradually
  • No amount of running the shower lets it settle at a usable temperature

Likely causes, most likely first

  1. Thermostatic cartridge seized with limescale. In hard water areas the wax sensor inside can lock solid at one end of its travel, so the dial turns but the cartridge itself doesn’t move.
  2. Cold-feed non-return valve stuck, or cold pressure too low against the hot. This tends to show up as the shower running hot only rather than jammed at one extreme; a stuck valve should be checked, and replaced by a plumber if it won’t free, rather than taken out. Worth confirming the cold supply pressure is roughly matched to the hot too.
  3. Temperature handle has slipped on its spindle. If the handle isn’t gripping the cartridge properly, turning it does nothing; the cartridge could still be fine.
  4. Isolation valve only part open. A hot or cold isolation valve left half-closed after a repair can starve one side and make the shower feel stuck on the other.
  5. Hot water supply itself isn’t hot enough. Worth ruling out on its own, since a cartridge can only mix the hot water it’s given; a boiler or cylinder running cool will leave the shower lukewarm at any setting.
  6. Cartridge has failed internally. Less common than a seizure, but the internal parts that balance hot and cold can break rather than just clog.

Likely cause

In most hard water areas, this is limescale locking the cartridge solid rather than a part that's actually broken. A handle that isn't gripping the spindle is the free check worth ruling out before you order a replacement part.

Check this first

  • Check the temperature handle is properly seated on the spindle underneath, not just resting on top of it
  • Check both isolation valves behind the cabin are fully open
  • Run a hot tap elsewhere in the house to confirm the hot water itself is properly hot, before assuming the fault is in the cabin
  • Try turning the control firmly to both extremes to feel whether it’s genuinely jammed or just not gripping

How to identify your part

The same cartridge families cover this fault as a fluctuating temperature … Type 6, Type 8, Type 12, the Vernet wax-sensor versions, and CS1/Colorspa. Pull the seized cartridge out and check which threads or push-fit it uses before ordering, since the wrong type won’t seat properly even though the housing looks the same.

Parts that fix this problem

The following replacement parts usually fix this issue.

How to fix it

  1. Check both isolation valves behind the cabin are fully open before you do anything else
  2. Isolate the water supply before touching the valve itself
  3. Pull the temperature handle off and check it’s not just sitting loose on the spindle; refit and check it grips properly before going further
  4. If the handle is fine, remove the retaining nut and draw the cartridge out
  5. Fit a new cartridge if the old one won’t move freely by hand once it’s out
  6. Turn the water back on and run the shower to check it reaches a normal temperature before you finish up

When to call a professional

A plumber's job if there's no isolation valve on the supply and you'd otherwise have to shut off the water to the whole house, or if the hot water elsewhere in the house is also running cool, since that points at the boiler or cylinder rather than the shower cabin; everything else here is a DIY cartridge swap.
